How we get our data

Most contractor directories are built from reviews, purchased lead lists, or self-submitted profiles. This one is built from state license records. Everything below is checkable.

Where the listings come from

State licensing authorities publish licensee records through public portals. We collect verified construction and contractor license types (such as residential builders, general contractors, electrical, plumbing, HVAC/mechanical, and specialty trades) and exclude inactive or expired records. Every listing directly cites its licensing authority source.

Place names, counties and coordinates come from OpenStreetMap.

What each listing contains

License number, type and expiry dateFrom the state record
Business or licensee nameFrom the state record
City, state, ZIPFrom the state record
TradeFrom the license type where the state names it — otherwise inferred from the business name and labeled as inferred
Street address, phone, email, websiteNot published by the state. Shown as — until the business adds them
Ratings and reviewsNot collected. We do not buy or estimate them

Expired licenses are excluded

The state file contains licenses going back decades, many long expired. A listing appears here only if its license has not passed its expiry date. Roughly three in five records in the source file are excluded on this basis.

Where we infer, and how we say so

Michigan licenses electricians, plumbers and mechanical contractors by name, so those trades are exact. It does not separate roofing, siding, flooring, painting, concrete or remodeling — all of them fall under one residential builder license with no trade recorded. Where a business name makes the trade clear, we infer it and label the listing (inferred), showing the phrase we matched. Where the name gives no reliable signal, we list the business as a general builder rather than guess.

Corrections

If a listing is wrong, the state record is the source of truth and the correction belongs there first. If your details are right but incomplete, you can set up a Fieldaira workspace from your listing and fill them in.
